About Forest Bathing

Drawing on the ancient Japanese tradition of Shinrin-Yoku, or forest bathing, this unique event is designed to help you connect with nature in a profound and meaningful way.

Unlike what the name might suggest, forest bathing doesn't require any actual immersion in water. Rather, the practice encourages you to become more attuned to your natural environment, taking in the sights, sounds, and smells in a mindful and intentional way.

Whether you're a seasoned nature lover or simply looking for a new way to immerse yourself in the magic of nature, this is a unique opportunity to feel more relaxed, energised, and connected to the natural world around you.

What to expect

During a forest bathing session, the main focus is on being fully present in the moment and engaging all of the senses.

This is a low-impact and gentle activity, suitable for all ages and fitness levels. The aim is not to hike or exercise, but simply to be in nature and allow the senses to become fully engaged.

Participants will be guided through a series of discrete mindfulness exercises that help them to become more aware of their surroundings and their own inner experience, helping them reduce stress and promote relaxation.

We will also take slow and mindful walks through the gardens, taking the time to explore the sights, sounds, and smells of the environment, and soak up the healing power of nature.

What to wear

On the day of the forest bathing activity, it's important to keep an eye on the weather forecast. Both heat and cold, as well as wet and dry conditions, can pose their own challenges.

Some of our favourite walks take place on rainy days, where the colours, views, sounds, and smells of nature take on a saturated quality, providing an immersive sensory experience. If you dress appropriately, you can stay warm, mostly dry, and comfortable. However, if the weather conditions become particularly challenging, we may need to reschedule the session for another day.

So, please come prepared wearing comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing and footwear to ensure that you have an enjoyable, and immersive forest bathing experience.

About the Gardens

Lafcadio Hearn Gardens is a unique place that combines the spiritual symbolism and traditional architecture of the East with the western idea of biography.

The 2.5 acre gardens are set on a hillside overlooking the dramatic sweep of Tramore Bay. Visitors are introduced to aspects of Japanese folklore through several stories written and translated by Lafcadio Hearn. These include The Cave of the Children’s Ghosts, and the legend of Urashima Taro.
